A new look at glazing…
If you’ve ever looked at a painting and felt that sense of endlessness, as if you could fall deep into the layers, sense something shifting beneath the surface, feel the atmosphere rather than just see it, this course is my way of showing you exactly how to create that.
Glazing has been used by artists for centuries…
But here, I take it into the realm of contemporary mixed media: subtle veils, atmospheric haze, translucent screens of pattern, planes of colour that unify, obscure, or reveal in unexpected ways.
Not as rules, but as possibilities.
This is a small course with big impact: focused, intentional, and designed to give you a “lightbulb shift” in how you approach depth and layering.
Whether you’re newer to mixed media or very experienced, this will expand your toolkit and the way you see your paintings.
WHO IS THIS COURSE FOR?
Artists who want to:
• add subtlety, atmosphere, and emotional resonance
• break out of flat, surface-level painting
• understand glazing in a fresh, contemporary way
• create depth without overworking
• weave paint, collage, and pattern together seamlessly
• bring sophistication and nuance into their mixed-media practice
If you’ve ever felt your work is missing something - a sense of air, of distance, of mystery - this course is that missing piece.

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN
The power of the glaze
Why glazes transform atmosphere, shift temperature, create depth, unify compositions, and “send things into the distance.”
You’ll learn traditional transparent glazing, opaque glazing, colour glazing, and partial glazing.
How to create atmospheric haze & softness
Learn to make a misty, ethereal glow using opaque glazing: the kind of veil that instantly softens harsh areas and creates emotional resonance in a painting.
Collage as a glaze
A beautifully contemporary twist: tissue-thin papers, wet-strength tissue, printed patterns, subtle veils of ink, all used as translucencies to deepen the work.
This alone will expand your sense of what “glazing” can be.
Pattern as an obscuring layer
Use mark-making or monoprinting to create a semi-transparent, screen-like plane of pattern that behaves like a glaze but delivers incredible richness and contrast.
Layering for true depth
How to weave all these approaches together - glaze over pattern, collage over glaze, opaque over transparent - to create paintings with dimensional pull and visual intrigue.
PLUS: sneak peeks into my larger courses
You’ll also get two short modules lifted directly from:
• Create Unique Collage Papers
And a preview of
• Indirect Mark Making
These previews show how glazing dovetails with collage, tissue veils, repeating pattern, and mark-making to create endless depth.

The demonstrations in this course are taught on existing panels and works-in-progress. Glazing is a technique applied after foundational layers are in place, so this course does not cover beginning a painting from scratch. This allows us to focus entirely on depth, atmosphere, nuance, and the interplay of layers - the true purpose of glazing.
